Even when we cannot rouse the conscience of the guilty by anger we may protect the weak and wronged who claim our first sympathy. xiii., p. 308; Preacher's Monthly, vol. - W.F.A. THIS GRACE IS DISPENSED TO EACH INDIVIDUAL SEVERALLY. God will respect the humble (Isaiah 66:2), he will give them grace (1 Peter 5:6), he will exalt them (1 Peter 5:6), and reward them with all good things. This theory makes the work of the Holy Spirit altogether unnecessary. TENDER-HEARTEDNESS. There is further the motive with which we are to work. And is not the Ephesian Church in this respect representative? 1. God help us to put away all evil speaking, and all malice! St. Paul tells us in the first chapter of the Epistle to the Romans. It arises out of moral estrangement from God, "being alienated from the life of God." The Church of Rome sets up one head to which all souls must bow, prescribes one ritual through which all souls must move, propounds one creed to which all souls must adhere. While Christ looked round on the hypocrites with anger he was at the same time grieved because of the hardening of their hearts. The apostle never regards the day of death as marking the day of final security, but rather fixes it for that day which completes the redemption in the rejoining of body and soul in their changeless incorruptibility. 3. Now, if Paul's ears were grieved with the immoralities of heathenism, how much more must we believe will the Holy Spirit be offended! "But such as is good for edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear." That is arrived at by most men only after a long continuance in iniquity; and that is an indication which gives sad ground for fearing that the Holy Ghost, without whom we can never feel anything as we ought, has ceased to strive with that hardened soul, has left that obdurate heart alone. - R.F. It is a thing unheard of among the Santals to give any goods on credit, so that the man saw that he had no alternative but to ask the seller to take back twelve shillings' worth of the rice. For as we grow in knowledge of Christ we learn to speak the truth in love. It implies that he was low down at some period. This new man, then, let us put on as that which we are never to put off. Or, under the pressure of competition, they fall in with the evil custom of the trade, and adulterate. 3. We shall not here attain to it; but we shall reach it when we are at length set free from our imperfections and our infirmities. What is meant is, "do not do that which is repugnant to the heart and desires of the infinite Spirit." It is ingratitude on our part to grieve him upon whom our salvation depends. In this alone is there safety against falsehood. "Alienated from the life of God." Why I Don't Have a Television - John Piper, Why People Find the Bible Difficult - A. W. Tozer, Your Life is Like the Morning Fog - James P. Shelly, A Challenge to Unscriptural Traditions and Practice - Video, Are Seminaries Legitimate? More especially should this be the case when he condescends to seal souls "unto the day of redemption." Three things are necessary. The command to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature is a command given to all the disciples of Jesus Christ, and the exhortation to teach and admonish one another is intended for all Christian people everywhere. This command implies that it is an easy matter to sin in our anger, and a hard thing to be angry and not to sin. Stealing in some way or other is a vice as prevalent as lying. Cultivate the powers of moral judgment, that your senses may, by reason of use, be keener to discern good and evil. (1) The grand purpose we should aim at. 3. i., p. 137; J. Vaughan, Sermons, 7th series, p. 97; J. W. Lance, Christian World Pulpit, vol. We fail of our vocation if we are satisfied with a churlish isolation. They are not only members of Christ, but of one another. THE NATURE OF THIS CALLING. That is an immutable unity which man cannot keep. 7. "Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and railing, be put away from you, with all malice." It was a custom of the Pythagoreans that, if betrayed into railing by passion, before the sun went down they shook hands, kissed one another, and were reconciled. As Christ is best described to us in the four Gospels, these Gospels are the chief source of Christian knowledge. THIS GIFT IS COMMUNICATED BY CHRIST AS THE RESULT OF HIS WONDERFUL HISTORY. The more the heavenly and spiritual union of all Christians in one body is out of sight and above understanding, the more necessary it is that we should be continually put in mind of it. God is a living Spirit. There is truth of character, which is opposed to insincerity. The callous heart was proof against all impression from without, and thus kept the mind uninformed or apathetic, till heart and mind were both buried in the gloom of hopeless paganism. See how this is essential to the Church. And if it be true that even the converted man, in whom what we may call the organs of spiritual perception have been quickened from their native paralysis, and the capacity of spiritual emotion in some good measure developed, by the working of Divine grace, has to wonder and lament that he believes so much, but feels it so little, we need hardly be surprised to find that in the case of most unconverted men living in a Christian country, and probably frequenting a Christian church, there is a perfect numbness of soul; as regards spiritual things they are, in the full sense of the words, "past feeling.". The work of the ministry is a work for all believers, and a work for none but believers. I. 2. By the presence of the Holy Ghost Christ is present everywhere, and not only present, but He is the very life of all that lives; He is the soul of every being in creation. God help us to put away all evil speaking, and all malice! Ephesians 4:8 Therefore it says, "WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN." 8-10). Men in every department of life are deceiving and being deceived by their fellow-men, and often for selfish and immoral ends. It has inward vitality, internal vital impulses and movements. B. Lightfoot, Consummation of the pre-Messianic Age and the Parousia, Destruction of Jerusalem vs. They who partake of His life are one body still. One Lord. The same Lord who went about every day doing good upon earth, is now doing good every day in the fullness of spiritual blessings which he is dispensing from the throne of his ascension-glory. 1. I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies" (Psalm 139:21, 22). It is according to "the measure of the gift of Christ," not according to the measure of a man's capacity, merit, or effort. First, there is the weariness of the narrow doctrinal basis which has been accepted as orthodox, which has made exclusion rather than inclusion the watchword of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever takes it for his law to do as he likes will not for long like what he does. He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.). A kindly spirit without a touch of censoriousness or harshness greatly recommends true religion. (1) The example of God himself, who is said to be "kind to the unthankful and evil" (Luke 6:35); (3) we are brethren both in the flesh and in the spirit. What is to be kept: "the unity of the Spirit." Ought the Church to Pray for Revival? (2) It is a breach of the golden rule that we should do to others as we would have them do to us. There he is. ; and now to the persons whom he has described by these sacred titles, and to whom he has spoken of these Divine mysteries, he gives a succession of precepts relating to the most elementary moral duties. There is not, in such conversation, nutriment for the moral being, exercise for the moral powers. Few of us would have thought of using it if we had not found it in the Bible.
